Week 18 - I is for Idun

I must say I am not so well informed when it comes to Norse mythology. We do not read as much about it in school as we could, or should. At least I think we should study it a little more since it's our heritage.

Idun is the scaldic god Bragi's wife in Norse mythology. She is the goddess of youth and has in her possession an eski,  a box made of ash wood, in which she keeps apples. Idun is the keeper of the rejuvenating apples that keeps the gods of Asgard young.

A story about her tells of how Loki makes her wander away from Asgard. She is abducted by a jötunn  disguised as an eagle and while she is missing the gods are starting to grow old. Thus they force Loki to bring Idun back, which he does by turning himself into a falcon and her into a nut.

Buckets of nuts and apples have been found in old Germanic graves and these things have had associations with fertility in Germanic paganism. The tribe of Vanir, which consisted of several fertility gods have also been associated with apples.

The name Idun is believed to mean "forever young", "the rejuvenating one" or "rejuvenator" and has been in use since pagan times, the 10th century.

Jag måste säga att jag vet inte så mycket om nordisk mytologi. Vi läser inte så mycket om det i skolan som vi skulle kunna, eller borde. Jag tycker i alla fall att vi borde läsa mer om det, det är ju vårt arv.

Idun är i nordisk mytologi skaldguden Brages hustru. Hon är ungdomens gudinna och har i sin ägo en eski  som är en trälåda gjord i ask i vilken hon förvarar äpplen. Idun är förvaltaren av de ungdomsäpplen som håller gudarna i Asgård unga.

En berättelse om henne handlar om hur Loke lurar henne att gå iväg från Asgård. Hon blir då bortförd av en jätte som tagit örnhamn och medan hon är borta börjar asarna åldras. De tvingar således Loke att hämta hem Idun vilket han gör genom att förvandla sig till en falk och Idun till en nöt.

Kärl med nötter och äpplen har hittats i gamla germanska gravar och dessa ting har i germansk hedendom haft associationer till fertilitet. Vanerna, som bestod av många fertilitetsgudar, har även de sammankopplingar med just äpplen.

Namnet Idun tros betyda "evigt ung", "ungdomsgivare" eller "den föryngrande" och har använts sedan hednisk tid, 900-talet.
